He came to the Vernon RCMP detachment three years ago to help with Steve McVarnock’s transition to the detachment’s top cop. Now, Insp. Jim McNamara is back at the detachment on a permanent basis. McNamara, who celebrates 25 years with the RCMP in July, is settling into his role as operations officer with the detachment. “I was here three years ago, seconded with Steve, and was here for about six months,” said McNamara. “The opportunity to come back to Vernon presented itself. I applied and I’m happy to be back.” McNamara, who comes to Vernon via the southeast district office in Kelowna, will oversee the city and rural operations with the detachment, positions held previously by Staff-Sgts. Cam Percy (city) and Len Carlson (rural). Percy is currently acting plainclothes commander, while Carlson is in charge of operations support. His duties with southeast district included working closely with the Vernon detachment, so McNamara has a pretty good handle on the community. “There are challenges,” he said of his goals. “I want to make sure we have a presence in the downtown core so people feel safe walking around downtown. “Like all communities, there are issues with the drug trade and we’re working hard to try and combat those. I’m not sure we’re any different than any other community in that sense,” said McNamara.
