Law Firm Funds Literacy Centre

Lawyers and literacy are going together nicely for a Vernon non profit organization. The Nixon Wenger firm is donating $50,000 over the next five years to the Junction Literacy Centre. The Centre's executive director Debbie Schiller says it gives them more stability for certain programs. "The Books for Babies program would not happen at all without this funding, and our other program (Come Read With Me) was struggling with maybe funds every year and now we can actually expand that program." ExTom Christensen of Nixon Wengerecutive director Debbie Schiller credits lawyer and former MLA Tom Christensen (pictured) for coordinating the funding. "Tom was a new lawyer with Nixon Wenger and he wanted to propose this type of support because he has such a passion for literacy and a concern for helping families better understand how they can support their children's early literacy."Schiller calls the donation "outstanding" as it allows them to count on the funding, and they can also look for alternate funds for use after the five years. The centre, located on 37th Avenue, is the hub for information about literacy programs and services in the North Okanagan.Lawyers and literacy are going together nicely for a Vernon non profit organization.ggling with maybe funds every year and now we can actually expand that program."
