Two important issues surfaced at Wednesday's NORD meeting: the status of the Duteau Creek reservoir and the progress of the Duteau Creek water treatment plan.
Staff reported that reservoir levels are at an all time low: as of April 19 water volume in the Duteau Creek reservoir was 2,500 acre feet (about 3,100,000 cubic meters). Previous low registered at 4,700 acre feet (about 5.8 million cu. meter). The situation is desperate at present. So, prepare your plants for the bad news. Stage three watering restriction are likely to proceed immediately and a number of drought emergency measures will be instituted.
Reporting on the Duteau Creek treatment plant we are told that it is about 80% complete and appears to be within budget. The bad news is: it is three months behind schedule. So far $22.3 million were paid out to the contractor.

Wow, we have a nice expensive tretment plant but cant use the water now. What happened to the plans to build up the dams 2.5 meters higher that were made years ago that would have allowed us to store more water during the average years when the dams spills over to be used for years like this. Any one else fed up with this email me please vernongrasshoppers@hotmail.com. I have a pile of info on the plans that were made that our beaurocrats made ages ago to do this and nothing was done. There were studies done that showed that this is possible and it the best way for greater Vernon to increase its storage capacity. Looks like this year they got caught with their pants down...and I am going to hold their feet to the fire this time, something needs to be done this is rediculous. Please email me, if you are interested in getting something going, if you maybe have a landscaping business like mine that depends on a reliable supply of wayer, or maybe a nursery....turf farm......orchard....etc and the list goes on. We need to be proactive and be able to store up more water during the good years.
