Coldstream Farm Named

Environmental Report Kate Bouey 8/19/2010 105.7 SUNFM

A quarterly report from BC's Ministry of the Environment says a Coldstream farm was issued with a pollution prevention order in the first three months of this year. It says this followed on-site inspections which determined that measures had to be taken to avoid contaminated run-off. The farm is named as Pan-o-RAMIC Farms Limited. The report also cites the North Okanagan Regional District which was ordered to seal an Antwerp Springs ground water well after the water contamination crisis in January. Some 3,500 residents in Coldstream and Lavington were affected. The district complied with the Ministry order in April.

A Coldstream farm has been ordered by the province to make changes to its operation. Pan-o-Ramic Farms run by Rod Palfrey was issued a pollution prevention order from the Environment Ministry after inspections revealed concerns about contaminated runoff. The farm --which spreads manure over its fields as fertilizer-- has been ordered to take immediate action to prevent runoff overflow, and to stop applying manure until a qualified professional is hired and develops an approved drainage control plan. In a separate order, the North Okanagan Regional District was issued an order under the Water Act to address a safety concern caused by an abandoned flowing well at Antwerp Springs. It's the first time the ministry has named names in its quarterly compliance and enforcement summary, with the hope of deterring people from breaking the rules.
