The turnoff to the Greater Vernon landfill could be the next highway site to undergo upgrades. Transportation District manager Murray Tekano says the Birnie Road intersection south of Vernon, is being looked at for improvements, similar to what took place at Bailey Road. He tells KISS FM, "You start with the initial analysis by looking at the accidents and incidents, and then determining what might be some of the remedies or causes, and then we determine whether we go forward with a more detailed evaluation." Many of the vehicles using the landfill have trouble turning left to get back onto the highway, and Tekano notes there was a fatal crash at the site a few years ago. "There are incidents occurring and there has been a fatality there, so fatalities always get our attention and we do an examination when those occur."
Meantime, the BC NDP's transportation critic and concerned community members will be visiting the Highway 97-Bailey Road intersection Tuesday. NDP spokesman Ed May says they originally were going to press the government to stop stalling on the upgrades. However, given the work that's underway, he says critic Harry Bains (pictured) and the members want a first-hand look at what's being done. "The community members after they've had a chance to look at what was announced (Friday), they may still have concerns coming out of this, or they may say, 'This is great, this is what we wanted, now let's make sure it gets completed quickly.'" An estimated $70,000 in improvements are underway at the turnoff to Predator Ridge including new signage warning of the intersection, speed reader boards, an overhead beacon, and rumble strips and signs to slow down traffic on Bailey Road.
