Portable overload angers parents

Kent Spencer, The Province August 30, 2010

NDP Leader Carole James will take the Liberal government to task today in Surrey for what she calls overcrowded conditions in B.C.'s largest school district. New Democrat Party representatives say James will address such problems as the hundreds of portable classrooms that have been built to cope with the fast-growing student population. MLA Jagrup Brar (Surrey-Fleetwood) said Sunday that the Liberal government has failed to provide sufficient capital funding and is guilty of faulty planning. "It's well known that 1,000 people are moving to Surrey every month. It is the fastest-growing city in B.C., maybe in Canada," he said. "The premier promised to make B.C. the best place for learning on the continent. It's a broken promise." According to the school district, the number of portables will rise to 292 from 217 this year -- enough, Brar said, to fill six high schools and 12 elementary schools. Each portable costs about $100,000 and is more costly to heat.Brar said cutbacks also include fewer counsellors and librarians.

Perhaps they should have applied for an Art's Grant, given the abstract colors in the attached photo.
