WHISTLER, B.C. - Premier Gordon Campbell is asking B.C. voters to think like a finance minister when they head to the polls next fall to decide the fate of the harmonized sales tax. The referendum set for September 2011 will ask voters whether to keep the HST after a petition collected more than half a million signatures against the tax. Campbell told the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler that people asked for a say on the tax and that's what they'll get. But he's asking people to look beyond politics and consider whether the tax is the best policy for the province's economy, adding that it is. Campbell admits he failed to properly sell the HST, comparing his government's performance to a failed figure skating routine in which he and Finance Minister Colin Hansen fell on their faces.
The premier has said that if more than 50 per cent of voters reject the HST in the referendum, he'll kill it.
