Last Antwerp Springs Wells Abandoned - Vernon's mayor says residents will face a hike in water rates

One year after a major contamination of the drinking water in the Coldstream-Lavington area, members of the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee have recommended the two remaining Antwerp Springs wells be abandoned. The water will be held in reserve for irrigation. The well in which the contamination occurred was sealed last April. A Ministry of Environment investigation into the source of the contamination continues.  The committee also held a lengthy discussion Thursday on water rates for the coming year but failed to set a residential price. Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert says householders face an increase. ``Increases are going to be there because of the (cost of building) the Duteau Creek water treatment plant.''  The committee has agreed to a block or tiered system of water rate increases which is supposed to penalize households where water use is high. They hope to hammer out the cost at a meeting next week.
