Motion To End Parks & Rec Fails

Mike Macnabb

A motion to scrap Greater Vernon parks, recreation and culture was defeated at Wednesday night's North Okanagan Regional District meeting. Chair Herman Halvorson says the call was to wind things down by the end of the year. "It's back to the drawing board for the participants. The way the staff is going to deal with the budget this year, they're going to go with the status quo, and then it's up to the participants which way they want to run with it." The motion came from Area C (BX Silver Star) director Mike MacNabb (pictured) who feels board members didn't understand it. "It wasn't to eliminate the parks at all. It was to make a better parks service,  and I think people got worried and perahaps a little bit afraid that that's what it was but there was no intent to do that.

MacNabb is right on the money. The present system is tried and old. Look at the ridiculous setup at Kal Beach with NORD, Vernon and Coldstream all individually owning a piece of the action including a shared boat trailer parking lot... costly (to taxpayer) redundancies, and confusing governance. Put local parks in local hands and agree to some cost sharing on common use facilities....it ain't rocket science!
