No means no! - OKIB opposed to a jail in Kelowna

The Chief of the Okanagan Indian Band is strongly opposed to a correctional facility being built in Kelowna's north most boundary with Lake Country.  Fabian Alexis says his members near the proposed site don't want it there because of safety concerns and a depreciation in land values.   So for the time being, Alexis isn't about to change his mind on a jail being built in his own backyard.  Alexis has confirmed that he will be meeting with Kelowna mayor Sharon Shepherd and Lake Country mayor James Baker on February 28th to discuss the facility.  The City of Kelowna is lobbying the provincial government to locate a correctional facility at the former Hiram  Walker distillery site, which has been re-zoned for a jail since 1996.   Kelowna is among the cities pushing for the prison, which would consist of 360 cells for prisoners serving a term of less than two years.
