There's yet another twist in the great prison debate in the North Okanagan. Spallumcheen may be in the running, according to Mayor Will Hansma. "In my mayor's report, I expressed an intention, if Lumby fails in their attempt for the correctional facility that I would be lobbying council to have them consider Spallumcheen as a location." Hansma
(pictured) says the township have lots of vacant land, including crown land, located away from neighborhoods, and the area needs the economic stimulus. He tells KISS FM, "We're wanting right now, and I think it would really (help) to increase the economic activity here. I think it would be a real bonus." The mayor says council was pretty quiet when he made the announcement, with the exception of Janice Brown. He says she was quite concerned, wondering what the community response would be. Hansma says no one indicated that they were not supportive, but all were quite cautious about the idea. Lumby will hold a referendum on the prison issue April 30th. The province is looking to build a 360 cell minimum security centre somewhere in the Okanagan by 2015.

I wonder what Mayor Hansma would not consider for his community. How about another animal waste rendering facility? Or perhaps a pulp mill?
