Despite the death of a teammate, the UBC Okanagan volleyball team is heading to the Nationals as planned. The team learned Monday morning Jordan Young, a first year Outside Hitter with the Heat, died in a single vehicle crash in Vernon Sunday morning. "The entire athletic department is shocked and saddened by this news, and we're doing our best to try to make some sense of it," says UBC Okanagan Athletics and Recreation Director Rob Johnson. The team, which recently took home gold at Provincials, is struggling to practice for nationals, which begin on Thursday in Sherbrooke, Quebec. "The entire team, including Jordan, has worked for seven or eight months to get to this point. It's very confusing for them all -- a very difficult time. At this point they're just trying to deal with the loss of a teammate and a good friend." Young was killed after his vehicle struck a power pole on Commonage Road in Vernon at 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning. He was transported to Kelowna General Hospital, where he died of his injuries. Police say alcohol and speed may be factors in the crash. "There's no good time to lose an 18-year-old. The Athletic Department and the University extend it's deepest sympathies to the Young family and to all his friends."
