Crash Victim Called Hero

A young father who died in a North Okanagan crash last week, is being called a hero by his relatives.  22 year old Randy Earl Duncan, formerly of Nakusp, more recently of Kamloops, was killed after his pick up truck collided with a semi on Highway 6, 40 km east of Cherryville Thursday.  Duncan's girlfriend suffered serious but non life threatening head injuries, while their six month old daughter escaped uninjured. Vernon RCMP Corporal Gerry Kovacs was told by family members, before the family departed that day, Duncan was adamant with his girlfriend, the baby be located in a seat on the passenger side--instead of behind his seat--- which likely saved the child's life.  "He was saying the road conditions could be bad and he wanted the child to be safe.As a result of that, they put the child on the other side of the vehicle, and the family is calling him a hero."  Kovacs says the crash proves the effectiveness of baby seats in vehicles.  "The baby is untouched, not a scratch. Baby seats work. Plain and simple."  Kovacs says the cause of the crash is still being investigated by the RCMP and the Coroner's Service.
