B.C. Attorney-General Barry Penner resigns

Barry Penner is stepping down as B.C.’s attorney-general, saying he is not planning to seek re-election, fuelling speculation that British Columbians could be going to the polls as early as September. Although B.C. is not due for a provincial election until the spring of 2013, Premier Christy Clark has put her party on election readiness alert and Mr. Penner is the first high-profile departure as a result. “The BC Liberal Party is encouraging MLAs to begin the nomination process to be a candidate in the next election. By announcing my decision now, there will be time for an open nomination process in Chilliwack-Hope,” he said in a statement.
