Minister Delays Bed Funding; UBCO Bus

Attention: open in a new window.
Mike de Jong at VJH (Kiss FM file photo)Maybe by the end of the year.  That's when the Health Ministry may provide more bed funding to reduce overcrowding at Vernon's hospital.  Mayor Wayne Lippert says that was the outcome of a meeting with Health Minister Mike de Jong at the Union of BC Municipalities conference in Vancouver.  "He doubted very much that we would have an answer for the shelled-in floors for the October opening, but hopefully in overlooking the provincial budget, maybe we'll have an answer by the end of the year." "We'd always like to get an answer right away, but in working with Minister de Jong, he's been positive." There had been hopes the funding may be announced for the tower's official opening October 13th.  Hospital staff and residents have been pushing for up to 60 more beds in the top two shelled-in floors of the Polson Tower. Lippert says Vernon MLA Eric Foster presented de Jong today with a 6,000 name petition in support of the funding. Meantime, Lippert says city and transit staff will be looking at solutions to the overcrowded Vernon to UBCO buses, possibly using a new type of bus.

They'll announce the beds when we have the next election in 2013.
