Vernon City Council Accomplishments 2007

Inspired by Mayor Wayne Lippert's comments to Sun Fm Mayor Looks Back at 2007 I have put his list of accomplishments on top of the list and have added a few more of my own: If you have any other accomplishments that you can think of, post in comments and I'll add to my list. I will then have a poll on the side to anoint the #1 accomplishment of this Council in 2007: LIST CLOSES ON Thursday at midnight.
  1. police and by-law officers have made a real improvement in the problems of drug dealing and people not feeling safe downtown. (WL)
  2. making progress on the tough issues of affordable housing and homelessness.(WL)
  3. 40 unit building near the sewage treatment plant will open soon (WL)
  4. Appointed Mayor of Vernon as sole representative to prestigious Super Regional Committee that will decide on the Valley's future. (12 members in total) (DQ)
  5. Mayor of Vernon appointed as Director and vice Chair of SIDIT (Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust) (DQ)
  6. Supported Hospice House with a $60,000 grant. Showing true regional spirit the Council paid for the DCC's for water and Parks that will flow to the GVSC.
  7. Allowed the Casino to relocate and expand.
  8. Delayed the establishment of any Halfway House Plans until after the results of Abramenko inquiry are made public.
  9. Permanently put a stake in the heart of using the Alternative Approval Method (counter petition) for any future capital initiative which is wanted but not necessarily needed.
  10. Allowed campfires in backyards under certain conditions to continue.
  11. Vernon Airport and Manager Graham Go receive B.C. Aviation Council’s William Templeton Trophy for outstanding initiative and achievement
  12. Specified Area tax for Outfall Pipe finally paid off in 2007. (saves me $31.62)
  13. Fire department sets up first responders program. Fire Chief Johnny Lysholm is pleased to announce that, effective 6:00 AM Monday, August 20, 2007, Vernon Fire – Rescue Services will commence participation in the B.C. First Responder program as approved by City of Vernon Council.

Was less open and transparent than any previous mayor of recent times. Had longer meetings and less resolutions than ever.Operates best on the dark side. Created more committees than ever and achieved less than ever.Has created a whole new language-but it is one that most people can not understand.
